Nerds on a Bus

Today we had the opportunity to join some of the folks from Kat’s workshop for a trip out to the lakes at Bishoftu, where one of them has previously done some sampling.

We started the day with breakfast at Fabrica Third Space, a coffee shop / restaurant / club / hang out. Then we got in the mini bus for the roughly one hour trip out to Bishoftu. It was fun to get out into the countryside – lots and lots of construction with new roads, a new airport, and endless new housing.

Bishoftu is a bit of a resort town – there’s a water park, and some of the lakes are circled with fancy hotels and spas. We started at one of these resorts, with some coffee and juices on their terrace so we could admire the lake. For Kat, it was birding heaven – the lakes are great habitats for diverse species, and she ended the day with 34 different species!

The rest of the afternoon was more birds, more lakes, and a lovely lunch. By the time we made it back to the hotel, we were very dusty and a bit exhausted. I’m still a bit jetlag-fogged as well, so I’ll work on some better stories for tomorrow!

34 different kinds of birds—wow! Maybe Deb can ID some. I was hoping you’d get to do something with Kat’s colleagues. Hope you sleep well now!
